There's Nothing Wrong With Flying Under the Radar (12/13/2013)
High school kicking can in many ways be like the game of chess – you wait for your opportunity (as long as that may be), and you either capitalize or you fail. Many coaches rely on the “four down territory” strategy, some naturally lack confidence in kickers, and some have such a potent offense that there is only a need for extra points. Regardless, a kicker will have no control over these issues, and one can only wait for their chance to shine. Carter McCauley, a senior kicker out of Owatonna, Minnesota embraced his opportunities as a kicker – and he never looked back....Carter McCauley

Not many programs can brag about special teams, but in this instance, Warwick loses a stud kicker in Patou Griggs, but has two more years with ace punter Lee Shrader. “We plan on putting athletes that can run down the field and tackle on our special teams,” Jackson stated. “We have Lee Shrader returning, he had an average of about 47 yards per punt last year, and we’ve found another soccer player who can kick in Grayson Hubbard and we have a great kicker coming up from J.V. in Alan Michael Norton. Both are sophomores. We may be fortunate enough to have a placekicker, a kickoff guy, and a punter this year.” ...Lee Shrader

(9/27/2012)
LACEY — The last two scholastic football seasons were not fun for Bill Belford. Belford, a senior wide receiver at Lacey, said he missed the 2010 season with a spleen injury. He said he could not play in 2011 because he was academically ineligible. “Watching the team from the stands was frustrating as anything because I wanted to be out there,’’ Belford said. Belford is out on the field playing, and his presence and big play-making ability has been a major boost for a Lacey team that went 4-6 last season and struggled on offense. He now has five touchdowns in the Lions first two games, including three on Saturday in Lacey’s 37-20 win over Toms River North in a Shore Conference Class A South game. “It’s basically the best feeling in the world to come out and play again,’’ Belford said. Belford scored on a 99-yard kickoff return, a 62-yard pass from junior wide receiver Christian Tutela on a reverse pass and on a 7-yard pass from junior quarterback Tom Kelly that gave Lacey (2-0, 1-0) the lead for good at 21-14 with 1:24 left in the first half. “Finally, he has the opportunity to play and prove himself as a football player,’’ said Lacey coach Lou Vircillo, who collected career win No. 250 during his 37-season head coaching career. “He decided to make a commitment and he got himself squared away. I feel very good for him.’’ Belford’s kickoff return came 18 seconds after Toms River North (1-1, 0-1), had grabbed a 7-0 lead on 2-yard TD run by sophomore quarterback Carmen Sclafani. Belford appeared close to being in the end zone when he fielded Chris Gulla’s kickoff and then sprinted away from all pursuers. “Everybody set up their blocks perfectly,’’ Belford said. “It was a left return. I faked it to the right. All their monmentum was shifted to the right. I cut it back to the left and there was an open hole.’’ “He is truly an exceptional athlete,’’ Vircillo said. “We just faced very exceptional athletes, I thought. When I watched North against Howell, I thought how are we going to beat this team? Then, I watched Belford run against them, and I thought, ‘Holy Mackerel. He’s better than they are.’ ’’ The second TD came after the second of Sclafani’s three TDs — a 37-yard run on a fourth-and-2 had given Toms River North a 14-7 lead. Tutela took a handoff, started on the “Jet Sweep’’ action, then stopped and lofted pass down the right sideline to a wide-open Belford. Belford’s third TD capped an 83-yard, nine-play drive that was keyed by a 50-yard run by senior running back Kyle Spatz. The Lions then capitalized on Toms River North mistakes in the second half. A fumble led to a 28-yard field goal by Liem Dolly with 5:39 left in the third quarter. Less than two minutes later, Chris Jensen intercepted an attempted desperation pitchout by Sclafani and raced 30 yards for a TD. Spatz returned an interception 97 yards for the final TD with 15.4 seconds left. Toms River North’s offensive line suffered a major blow in the first quarter when starting center Nicholas Silva suffered a broken leg while playing on special teams. ...Liam Dolly

St. Augustine kicker boots his way into history (8/5/2011)
Before the kick, Seamus McMorrow heard encouragement on the sideline from his coaches and teammates. He felt butterflies as he lined up for the attempt from the 47-yard line. Best of LI: Norton's FG Gives Trojans LIC (12/6/2010)
UNIONDALE, NY -- Coaches and players spend hundreds of hours looking at videotape and dissecting opponents. But no amount of video work and no game plan could have prepared Garden City and North Babylon for what was the turning point in Friday's battle of unbeatens for the Long Island Class II football championship. A 38-yard field goal by sophomore Ryan Norton with 6:50 remaining - his first attempt of the season - enabled Garden City to upend North Babylon, 9-6, before a crowd of 5,500 at Hofstra's Shuart Stadium. It was a beast of a defensive struggle. Two high-scoring teams found themselves locked in an offensive coordinator's nightmare. The quickness on the corners shut down the running game and the secondary speed negated the passing game. Every yard was hard-earned and came with a price....Ryan Norton

Norton is Kicker Extraordinaire (12/6/2010)
Adam Sandler's late-'90s comedy song poked fun at place-kickers, saying they aren't respected members of a football team. Ryan Norton, Garden City's junior kicker, is not lumped into that category. All the Trojans know this Saturday's Long Island Championship game against Bellport could sway on the pendulum of his right leg. Why? Because that's exactly what happened last season. Having never kicked a field goal at the varsity level, he was 15 years old when he trotted on the field at Hofstra and nailed a 38-yarder to give Garden City the 2009 Long Island Class II title with a 9-6 win over North Babylon. "Everyone was probably wondering why we did it," Garden City coach Tom Flatley said about his choice to use a rookie kicker. "Ryan's range was greater than our regular kicker. It wasn't much of a major decision to make." This season, Norton hasn't just established himself on his own team, but also on the Island. Norton is 42-of-45 on extra points, including a school-record 38 in a row, and 7-for-8 on field goals. His longest was a 40-yarder against Calhoun in the first round of the playoffs, and his three FGs that day are a Nassau playoff record....Ryan Norton

Garden City defeats Calhoun 29-7 in first round of Nassau Conference II Football playoffs (12/6/2010)
News-Sports.net - Nov 08,2010 - Garden City senior Stephen Jahelka rushed for 101 yards on 17 carries and capped an 11-play, 64 yard drive on the opening series with a three-yard touchdown run to become the all-time scoring leader at Garden City with 36 touchdowns and 218 points as No. 2 Garden City (8-1) defeated No. 7 Calhoun (3-6) 29-7 in the first round of the Nassau Conference II playoffs. Ryan Norton, who nailed a 40-yard field goal just before the half for a 19-0 lead, became the first kicker in Garden City history to hit three field goals in a game. Hillsborough County football: Week 1 playoff preview (11/22/2010)
Hillsborough at Largo: With neither squad known for having a consistently productive passing attack, this one could be a low-scoring affair decided by the kicking game. Hillsborough 35, East Bay 13 (11/22/2010)
GIBSONTON - Mattias Ciabatti kicked a 50-yard field goal and Tim Randolph ran for 131 yards including a 64-yard touchdown as Hillsborough (1-0, 4-2) defeated East Bay (0-1, 0-5) in the first district game for both teams. "These are called money games in Hillsborough," Terriers Coach Earl Garcia said. "That is what we have coached all season long and told our seniors: You have to win two out of three to get in the playoffs and that gets us the first one tonight." Ciabatti kicked a 20-yard field goal in the second quarter as time expired; passed for a 2-yard conversion in the third quarter and kicked three extra points on the night. "I have never seen anything close to that," Garcia said. "I am going to find out if that is a record. If Mattias isn't the best, I don't know who is. He has made seven field goals in nine games and missed only one. He has to be a leader in the state." ...Mattias Ciabatti

“It’s All Good for M-A Kicker – Even from 57 Yards Away” (10/28/2010)
In high school football, coaches don't often have confidence in their kickers. Extra-point tries are far from automatic, and many teams won't even attempt field goals, because the chances of actually making them are so low. But Menlo-Atherton's Sione Taufoou is not one of those coaches. And Sam Falkenhagen is not one of those kickers. With five seconds left in the first half, and the ball on the Sacred Heart Prep 40-yard line, Taufoou figured, Why not? Why not, indeed. Falkenhagen made the field goal try, from 57 yards. For many high school football teams, the kicking game is almost an afterthought. Most coaches are lucky to have a player who has even the most rudimentary understanding of kicking a football. ROWLETT SPECIAL TEAMS COMES UP BIG (11/10/2009)
ROWLETT SPECIAL TEAMS COMES UP BIG 0 Ratings / 0 Comments The Rowlett Eagles and Sachse Mustangs entered Friday night’s football game knowing that the winner advances to the playoffs. Eagles senior punter Cameron Frosch and Eagles JV kicker Nick Bruno would be forced into action after starting placekicker Chase Thrasher was unable to play due to injury. Eagles senior DB/kickoff returner Tyler Chase answered Sachse’s first drive touchdown with a little magic of his own. Chase received the Sachse kickoff at the 20, hit the hole and 80 yards later brought the score even at 7. Senior punter Cameron Frosch was perfect on the night with four extra points and a 31 yard field goal that what would later prove to be the difference in the game in the 31-28 win. Frosch continued his normal duties of punting with a monster 4.25 second punt in the first half that the Sachse returner fumbled and the feisty Rowlett special teams coverage gobbled up on the 10 yard line. Rowlett would score a touchdown a few plays later. Eagles kicker Nick Bruno would later find himself making a touchdown saving tackle as the Sachse returner sliced through the Eagles to mid-field. Rowlett will face their biggest game against the Skyline Raiders in the first round of the playoffs next Friday at Mesquite Memorial Stadium. ...Cameron Frosch
